“I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked.”
Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is opening up about the disproportionate number of skin-baring scenes she has in comparison to other cast members on the buzzy HBO series.
Sweeney, 24, who plays a high schooler navigating a complicated and promiscuous dating life, has a number of topless scenes on the HBO hit, as Teen Vogue points out. But she insists that series creator Sam Levinson doesn’t push her to do anything she isn’t comfortable with.
“Sam is amazing,” she said, per BuzzFeed “There are moments [in the script] where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here’…. He was like, ‘Okay, we don’t need it.’”
She continued, “I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”
Unfortunately, some of Sweeney’s past projects had made filming intimate scenes much less comfortable, sometimes leaving the actress with a “disgusting” feeling.
“I’ve had experiences where I want to go home and scrub myself completely raw because I feel disgusting…. I didn’t feel comfortable with my castmate or the crew, and I just didn’t feel like my character would be doing it,” she recalled.
But she’s not totally satisfied with her Euphoria role—or at least how it was received—noting that her big break came on HBO’s White Lotus, which premiered after Euphoria.
“I’m very proud of my work in Euphoria. I thought it was a great performance,” Sweeney said.
“But no one talks about it because I got naked. I do The White Lotus and all of a sudden critics are paying attention. People are loving me. They’re going, ‘Oh my God, what’s she doing next?’ I was like, ‘Did you not see that in Euphoria?”
Both Euphoria and White Lotus are streaming on HBO Max now.
