There is no conclusive proof why women are more prone to hypothyroidism while it is the same gland working server in women than in men but the fact is they are. The incidence of this malady is more pronounced in pre-menopause in women. They could also develop it at the time of pregnancy. Adolescence is another stage in women’s life that the same way in both men and women but the fact remains that they are. The complications too are more has the potential to get afflicted by it. The hormonal imbalance that is present in women during these periods could be the cause for the thyroid malfunction. Growing women could be adversely affected with their reproductive system not developing the way it should. Conception when having hypothyroid is a risky proposition and best avoided.

Treatment for hypothyrodism in women involves administration of thyroxin supplements. This brings the prevalent reduced levels of thyroid to the required level. Individual cases will need individual diagnoses and the prescription may vary too. Health supplements could be prescribed too.

Changes in dietary habits too may be called for. The food in-take must include whole grains, a good amount of sea food, fruits like avocados and bananas. As the disease sets in at a slow phase, so does the treatment for hypothyroidism in women is long-drawn out. It takes months to achieve the desired result and anomalies like weight gain, sluggishness, depression and hair loss etc to slowly start correcting themselves with treatment for hypothyroidism for women.
